Car Rental in Reykjavík: Compare Prices, Choose Smart

Find Your Perfect Rental Car: The 3-Question Framework

1. When Are You Travelling?

  • Summer (May–September): 2WD is ideal for the Ring Road — 4,200–7,000 ISK cheaper per day than a 4×4.
  • Winter (November–March): 4WD is essential. Wind gusts regularly reach 20 m/s. Budget 16,800–25,200 ISK/day.
  • Shoulder Season (April, October): Unpredictable conditions — 4WD recommended for peace of mind.

2. Where Are You Going?

  • Golden Circle only: Any 2WD works year-round. 300km total, economy cars are fine.
  • Ring Road (1,332km): 2WD adequate in summer, 4WD required in winter. Allow 7–10 days.
  • Highlands & F-Roads: 4WD legally required. Accessible June–September only.

3. How Many Passengers and How Much Luggage?

  • Summer + Ring Road + 2 people = Dacia Duster (from 5,700 ISK/day)
  • Winter + Ring Road + 4 people = Toyota RAV4 (from 19,600 ISK/day)
  • Summer + Highlands + Adventure = Toyota Land Cruiser (from 25,200 ISK/day)

How Much Does a Car Rental in Reykjavík Really Cost?

There is a significant gap between the advertised rate and what you actually pay. Here is a realistic all-in breakdown for a 7-day Ring Road trip in summer 2026 with a Dacia Duster 4×4:

  • Base rental (7 days): 42,000 ISK (6,000 ISK/day)
  • Full insurance — GP + SAAP: 29,400 ISK (4,200 ISK/day)
  • Fuel — 1,500km at 7L/100km at 182 ISK/L: 19,110 ISK
  • Road tax — 1,500km at 6.95 ISK/km: 10,425 ISK
  • Total all-in: 100,935 ISK (14,419 ISK/day)

Iceland's 2026 Road Tax Explained

Iceland introduced a per-kilometre distance tax of 6.95 ISK/km on 1 January 2026. Most rental companies charge a flat 1,400 ISK/day. The full Ring Road (1,332km) costs around 9,257 ISK in road tax. Fuel prices dropped 30% in 2026 to 182–203 ISK per litre (down from 280 ISK in 2025), partially offsetting the new tax.

Iceland Car Rental Insurance: Do Not Skip It

Iceland's environment is genuinely hazardous to rental cars. Volcanic ash sandblasts paintwork, gravel chips from passing trucks crack windscreens, and wind gusts reaching 20 m/s can tear doors off hinges.

The Four Coverage Types

  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): Legally required and included. Deductible 49,000–70,000 ISK.
  • SCDW (Super CDW): Reduces collision deductible to 12,600–21,000 ISK.
  • GP (Gravel Protection): Covers stone chips, cracked headlights, windscreen damage. Replacement: 168,000+ ISK.
  • SAAP (Sand and Ash Protection): Covers volcanic ash damage. Full repaint: 700,000–1,120,000 ISK.

Zero Excess bundle: All four coverages combined eliminate your deductible entirely and remove the credit card security hold (normally 280,000–420,000 ISK). Costs an extra 4,200–5,600 ISK/day.

Not covered by any policy: undercarriage damage from rough terrain, river crossing damage, and wind damage to car doors if not held properly (door repair: 378,000–630,000 ISK).

Keflavík Airport vs. Downtown Reykjavik: Where to Pick Up Your Car

Option 1: Keflavík Airport (KEF) — 50km from Reykjavik

  • Free 5-minute shuttle from the terminal to the rental lot
  • Most international flights land in the morning — car ready by 10am
  • Immediate Ring Road access straight from the airport
  • Note: airport parking 1,120–1,680 ISK/day; downtown red zone up to 840 ISK/hour

Option 2: Downtown Reykjavik

  • Best if you want to explore the city first without parking hassle
  • Flybus from KEF: 4,480 ISK per person
  • Taxi from KEF: 21,000 ISK flat rate
  • Drawback: you lose flexibility for spontaneous day trips until you collect the car

For a realistic 7-day trip, budget 95,000–145,000 ISK all-in:

  • Base rental: 60,000–85,000 ISK
  • Full insurance coverage: 25,000–35,000 ISK
  • Fuel: 16,000–22,000 ISK
  • Road tax: ~10,000 ISK

Budget 14,000–16,000 ISK per day for a mid-size SUV with full coverage, or 20,000+ ISK per day for larger 4×4s in winter.
