Car Rental Insurance in Iceland: What You Actually Need (and What You Don't)

CDW, PIP, PZP, gravel protection, sand and ash cover - a plain-language breakdown of Go Iceland's insurance tiers and what Iceland's roads actually demand.

The short version

Iceland's roads are beautiful and legitimately dangerous. A chip of gravel can take out a windshield on the Ring Road. A gust of wind off the south coast can fling a car door open and tear it off its hinges. Neither of those is covered by basic insurance.

Before you arrive, you need to understand three things: what the standard Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) actually covers, what it specifically excludes, and whether paying more for premium cover is worth it for your trip. This page answers all of that, using GO Iceland's actual insurance tiers and terms.

What CDW covers and what it doesn't

Every Go Iceland rental includes basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver). This covers the car against most accidents and collisions, but it leaves you liable for the first 350,000 ISK of any claim on standard cars, or 450,000 ISK on campervans. That liability amount is also what Go Iceland holds as a pre-authorisation on your card at pickup.

CDW does not cover these situations, regardless of what tier you purchase:

  • Undercarriage and chassis damage (off-road impacts, bottoming out, river crossings)
  • Water damage from river crossings or flooding
  • Wind-blown door damage (doors forced open by gusts)
  • Sand and ash damage to paint, glass, and bodywork
  • Windshield and glass chips or cracks (unless SCDW is included)
  • Tyre and rim damage
  • Clutch and mechanical damage from driver error
  • Misfuelling (putting petrol in a diesel car, or vice versa)
  • Interior damage and staining
  • Damage to accessories - GPS units, WIFI hotspots, keys
  • Damage caused under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Damage on prohibited roads (F-roads without appropriate vehicle)
  • Sea spray damage near the coast
  • Gross negligence

This list is important. Many travellers assume their insurance covers everything short of deliberate destruction. It doesn't. The exclusions above apply at every level - they cannot be waived.

Go Iceland's insurance tiers

Basic CDW

Included with all rentals

Self-risk: 350,000 ISK standard / 450,000 ISK campervans

Deposit required: Yes

This is the floor. You're covered against collision damage above your self-risk amount, but gravel, glass, sand, ash, tyres, and undercarriage are your problem. If you're driving the Golden Circle or staying within Reykjavik, this might be adequate. For anything else, it isn't.

PIP - Premium Insurance Package

Self-risk: 50,000 ISK

Deposit required: No

Included: CDW + SCDW (glass/gravel) + TP (theft) + GP (gravel) + SAAP (sand & ash)

PIP cuts your liability from 350,000 ISK down to 50,000 ISK and eliminates the card deposit. It adds gravel protection, glass cover, theft protection, and sand and ash protection in a single package. Drivers under 20 must purchase at least PIP.

This is the minimum we'd recommend for anyone driving outside Reykjavik.

PZP - Platinum Plus Package

Self-risk: 0 ISK

Deposit required: None

Included: Everything in PIP + TIREP (tyre and rim protection) + WIFI hotspot + 3 additional authorised drivers

PZP takes your liability to zero. No deposit, no excess, no bill at the end regardless of what happens (within the covered categories - the universal exclusions above still apply). It also includes a WIFI hotspot for the duration of your trip and covers up to three extra drivers at no additional charge.

If you're driving F-roads, touring the south coast in spring, or travelling in a group where multiple people will be driving, PZP is worth considering on cost grounds alone.

Why Iceland's roads create risks you won't find elsewhere

Gravel

Around 8,000 km of Iceland's road network is unpaved. Even paved roads in rural areas carry loose chips, and lorries passing in the opposite direction can send stones directly at your windshield. A chip or crack that looks minor will typically cost 40,000-100,000 ISK to repair. Without SCDW or GP, that's your bill.

If you're driving the Ring Road - particularly the eastern section - or heading to the highlands, gravel damage is not a remote possibility. It's a routine occurrence.

Sand and ash

Iceland's south coast sits downwind of vast volcanic sand fields. Between February and April, when snow has thawed but grass hasn't grown back enough to hold the sand in place, winds above 15 m/s can sandblast a car's paint and windows within minutes. The damage is abrasive and cumulative - multiple shallow scratches across every exposed surface.

Sand and ash damage repairs are among the most expensive on the island, with costs cited by Icelandic rental companies in the range of hundreds of thousands of ISK for full repaints. SAAP (Sand and Ash Damage Waiver) is a separate add-on under basic CDW. It's included in both PIP and PZP.

Even in summer, sandstorms can occur. If you're driving the south coast at any time of year, SAAP matters.

Wind-blown doors

Iceland's coastal winds regularly exceed 20 m/s (72 km/h). A door opened into a strong gust can be forced back against its stops and permanently bent or detached from its hinges. This is not a freak event - it's one of the most common damage claims in Iceland. Repairs typically run 200,000-600,000 ISK.

Wind-blown door damage is not covered by CDW, SCDW, GP, or SAAP - not by any Go Iceland insurance package. The only protection is not opening your doors in exposed coastal areas during high winds.

F-roads and river crossings

F-roads (highland routes) require a 4x4 vehicle. Attempting them in a standard car is prohibited under your rental agreement and voids all insurance. River crossings are an extreme case: water entering the vehicle causes damage that no insurance covers.

Go Iceland does not recommend river crossings without experience and proper equipment. If you're unsure whether a ford is safe, wait for another vehicle, or turn back.

Does your credit card or travel insurance cover this?

A common assumption is that Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, or a comprehensive travel insurance policy will cover Iceland rental car damage. The reality depends on the card, the policy, and the damage type.

Credit card coverage

Most premium travel credit cards offer some form of rental car collision cover - but almost always as secondary coverage, only applying after you've exhausted your primary insurance. More importantly, most card policies explicitly exclude:

  • Vehicles over a certain value (often $50,000 USD)
  • Campervans and motorhomes
  • Off-road driving
  • Damage in Iceland specifically (some policies exclude high-risk destinations)
  • Iceland-specific perils: sand, ash, gravel, wind

The only way to know what your card covers in Iceland is to call the benefits line and ask specifically about volcanic sand damage and gravel protection in Iceland before you travel. Get it in writing.

Travel insurance

Standalone travel insurance policies vary enormously. Some include comprehensive car rental cover. Many don't. Policies that do include it often have a cap well below what a serious sand or undercarriage claim would cost.

Our recommendation: if you're relying on credit card or travel insurance cover, confirm the specifics before arriving. If in doubt, the cost of upgrading to PIP or PZP provides certainty that external policies don't.

What happens if damage occurs

If you're in an accident or discover damage, contact Go Iceland immediately. Do not attempt to repair damage yourself or leave it unreported - this constitutes gross negligence under the rental terms and voids all coverage.

For accidents involving another vehicle or person, call the police (112). For weather-related damage or minor incidents, call Go Iceland directly. Our team is available 24/7.

After return, we conduct a full inspection with you present. Any damage is documented on a damage report, signed by both parties. Charges are applied against your deposit or card within the limits of your self-risk.

Choosing the right package for your trip

Not every trip carries the same risk. Here's a quick way to think about it:

Basic CDW might be sufficient if: you're staying in Reykjavik or driving only well-maintained main roads, you have confirmed credit card coverage for Iceland-specific risks, and you're travelling between May and September when sand risk is lower.

PIP makes sense if: you're driving the Ring Road or south coast, you want gravel and glass cover without the full PZP price, or you're a driver under 20 (required).

PZP makes sense if: you're driving F-roads or highland areas, you're travelling in spring when sand and ash risk peaks, multiple people in your group will drive, or you want zero liability and no deposit held on your card.

The price difference between tiers is often smaller than people expect when you account for the deposit hold. With basic CDW, 350,000 ISK (~€2,300) is locked on your card for the duration of the trip. PIP and PZP eliminate that entirely - which has a real cost if you're managing a travel budget.

Yes. All vehicles in Iceland must carry Third Party Liability (TP) insurance at minimum. This is included in every Go Iceland rental. CDW and the additional waivers are optional add-ons that reduce your personal liability for damage to the rental vehicle itself.

A note on Go Iceland's insurance underwriter

Go Iceland operates as an authorised insurance reseller on behalf of Sjoova-Almennar tryggingar hf., one of Iceland's largest and most established insurers, registered with the Central Bank of Iceland. When you purchase PIP or PZP through Go Iceland, your coverage is backed by a regulated Icelandic insurer - not a car rental company acting in its own interest.
