Note: F-Roads are legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles only. Driving a 2WD on an F-Road voids your insurance and risks a fine under Icelandic traffic law.
F-Roads, also known as Fjallvegur or "mountain roads", are Iceland's Highland mountain tracks that access some of the country's most spectacular and remote landscapes. These unpaved routes require 4x4 vehicles due to river crossings, volcanic ash surfaces, steep inclines, and rough terrain that would damage standard vehicles.
Key F-Roads accessible with our 4x4 campers:
Important: F-Roads typically open mid-June and close in September, depending on weather and road conditions. Check road.is for the current status before departure.
Peak season for 4x4 camper travel with 20+ hours of daylight, all F-Roads open, and stable weather. Expect higher prices (typically 20-30% above shoulder season) and crowded popular sites like Landmannalaugar. Book 3-6 months in advance. Best for: First-time visitors wanting guaranteed access to highlands, families with children, photographers seeking midnight sun lighting.
Lower prices, fewer tourists, and decent weather make this ideal for budget-conscious travelers. Some Highland F-Roads open late May/early June and close mid-September. A 4x4 is still essential for accessible routes. Risk of snow at higher elevations. Best for: Experienced travellers, those avoiding crowds, moderate budget, flexible itineraries.
All F-Roads are closed in winter, but a 4x4 camper is still the best way to chase the Northern Lights along the Ring Road — especially with snow, ice, and unpredictable conditions. Our winterised campers include studded tires, enhanced heating, and insulated sleeping areas. Lowest prices of the year but shortest daylight (4-5 hours December/January). Best for: Northern Lights chasers, winter photography, experienced winter drivers, and extreme budget consciousness.
The most unpredictable time to visit — expect snow, rain, road closures, and limited services. F-Roads are closed, and winter tires are required. Only recommended for highly flexible travelers who can roll with last-minute changes. The upside: near-empty roads and dramatic skies.

No, the Ring Road is well-maintained and accessible with a 2WD vehicle. However, a 4x4 camper can be a good idea for added safety and comfort, especially during the winter months. It also opens up every side road and Highland detour along the way.
